The Great Church of Naarden, officially the St. Vitus Church, is an impressive late Gothic cruciform basilica built between 1455 and 1518. Unique to this church is the imposing oak barrel vault, painted between 1510 and 1518 with over thirty colorful scenes from the Old and New Testaments. These medieval paintings are exceptionally well preserved and are aptly called the "Sistine Chapel of the North."
In addition to its rich history, the church today serves as a vibrant cultural venue. The annual performance of Bach's St. Matthew Passion attracts thousands of visitors, and with concerts, exhibitions, and guided tours, the Great Church remains a lively meeting place in the heart of the fortified town of Naarden.
