This impressive building is a former monastery. It was founded in 1910 by German Jesuits and named Sint-Bonifatiushuis. In 1937, it was taken over by the White Fathers of Cardinal Lavigerie, who played an important role in supporting the population of 's-Heerenberg during the war years.
In 1958, the fathers made way for the Salesians of Don Bosco from Ugchelen, who in turn renamed it Don Rua, after Father Michael Rua. At that time, the monastery served as a junior seminary where boys were trained to become monks until the building was sold in 1971.
Before the building was thoroughly renovated and turned into a residential centre for the elderly in 2012, it was also a large-scale centre for amateur art, the Creatief Centrum Gouden Handen. There was a puppet theatre, a collection of railway miniatures, and it became the location where Jomanda gave her paranormal performances.
