Sint Remigiuskerk - Spannum

N 53.1434892 / E 5.6074773

The tower is robust and as wide as the church itself. This is rare. Both date from the 15th century, but the tower was renewed in 1742 by Edzard van Sminia, grietman (predecessor of mayor and judge). The church was originally dedicated to St Remigius, who became bishop of Reims when he was only 18. He is said to have baptised the first king of the Franks, Clovis I, along with some 3,000 warriors during Christmas in the year 496.
