The heathlands in Overijssel have been managed with the help of sheep flocks for decades. On the Wierdense Veld, the 'hired flock' of André Kuhn is used. The flock consists of several sheep breeds, including the Drenthe heath sheep and the Schoonebeeker heath sheep.

In addition, a few goats and even two donkeys keep the sheep company. The flock is kept together by several herding dogs. The dogs and the donkeys also help to protect the flock against wolves.
