Along the Dutch-German border near Coevorden you’ll find the Schiefer Turm (leaning tower) of the Grenzerlebnisstation (border experience station) in the Grafschaft Bentheim region. You climb the tower on the German side and from the highest platform, you look out across the border into the Netherlands. These experience points were created to make the border and landscape tangible in a playful way – by climbing, observing and experiencing.
Historically, this border region has for centuries been a space between landscapes, cultures and trade routes. The Grenzerlebnisstationen respond to that layered past: once military or administrative in nature, but also a zone of exchange for people, goods and nature. Today, the tower is no longer a fortification, but a place of experience – to pause, look out over the landscape and realise you’re literally standing on the edge of two countries.
