One of Zwolle’s best-preserved monuments is the Sassenpoort, a former city gate that was built in 1406, in the heyday of the Hanseatic League. The large size of this city gate represented the wealth of Zwolle in that period. It is made up of 101.000 stones, mainly trachyte, tuff and Bentheim sandstone. ‘Meister Henric van Roden and the fine servants’ completed the construction in 1409. The tower has served as a city gate, prison, government and municipal archive and it is now a popular location for weddings. In 1893 Zwolle donated the tower to the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
