Estate Seldensate used to be a summer getaway for wealthy residents of ’s-Hertogenbosch who wanted to escape the city during the warmer months. The name comes from "seldene zathe", which roughly means "special estate" or "exceptional country house". Around 1300 the Gewatse farm stood here, near a ford in the Aa river. In the mid fifteenth century a small manor house was built which later became a moated castle with a brewery, dovecote, chapel and formal gardens.
After its glory days the castle fell into disrepair. This was due to neglect, families moving away, changing groundwater levels after river works, and damage during the Second World War. In 1961 the main building was demolished. What remains today are the foundations, a gatehouse with a dovecote and parts of the brewery.
In 1973 the neglected estate was taken over by the municipality. Since then the gatehouse and dovecote have been restored, the moat has been partly rebuilt and the area is now freely accessible for walkers.
