In the middle of a residential area in Ewijk lie the remains of a Roman Villa.
It’s around 50 AD when the Romans settle in the Netherlands. To defend their territory, Noviomagus (Nijmegen) becomes an important city. The local farmers can't produce enough food to feed all the soldiers. So, the Romans build several farms, including one here in Ewijk. At the heart of such a farm was a luxurious villa.
Recent archaeological research has shown that the villa on this site had marble floors, wall paintings, underfloor heating and a bathhouse. A spectacular find was a drainage channel no less than 17 metres long.
After the discoveries, the residential building plans were adjusted. Just look at the architecture. At the site itself, there’s a walking route with QR codes that guides you through the fascinating history of this place.
