Grand Café De Haven (next to the Ipse de Bruggen care facility) is located on the grounds of Hooge Burgh, where a permanent exhibition of Roman excavations can be seen. These excavations are the result of a remarkable discovery: the remains of a Roman Castellum, Nigrum Pullum. This Castellum, the base of Roman troops, is the smallest in the Netherlands and originally had a wooden structure dating from 47-70 AD. It was not until 110 years later that it was completely rebuilt in stone, close to the old bank of the Rhine.
Here, archaeologists discovered several Roman ships in the ground in the 1970s, underscoring the rich history of the site.
The Castellum was destroyed by a major fire around 275 AD, after which the area was probably abandoned for good. The display case on the Hooge Burgh site now offers a fascinating glimpse into this exciting period of the past.
