The river the Mark was for centuries an important link in the trade route from Breda to Maastricht. Large ships from Holland brought their cargo to Dordrecht, after which smaller boats transported the goods further to Breda. Here everything was transferred onto carts for the journey south. Through this route valuable products, including spices from distant lands, found their way through Brabant. The Mark was thus an indispensable waterway in the trade network of that time.
