The Reformed Church of Oosterhesselen stands on Geserweg, right on the village green. The white-plastered building dates back to the 15th century. The separate tower, known as the ‘Hesseler Stomp’, is a late-Gothic structure with a blunt spire. Originally, the church and tower were connected, but the nave was damaged during the siege of Coevorden in 1592. In 1628, the west wall of the choir was closed off, and ever since the church and tower have stood apart.
Inside the church, you’ll find a 1662 pulpit crafted by Jan Jansz. Decker and two gentlemen’s pews from the late 17th century. The organ, built in 1864 by L. van Dam & Zn., was placed in the church in 1983. The tower holds a bell cast in 1626 by Nicolaes Sickmans.
Both the church and tower are national monuments and form a striking sight in the heart of Oosterhesselen.
