Who thinks of North Holland, thinks of stolp farms. The stolp farm is a typical North Holland phenomenon, recognisable by the characteristic pyramid-shaped roof. Further on you see the only stolp farm in the Wieringermeer polder. At a respectful distance, out of respect for the residents of the house.
Stolp farms have been a familiar sight in the landscape for centuries. Originally they were designed in the 16th century for farming families and their livestock, with living space, working space and storage under one roof. Moreover, the clever wind-resistant construction provided stability on the soft polder soil and on the Wadden ground.
Who crosses North Holland, discovers how small groups of stolp farms mark the landscape here and there, except here, in the Wieringermeer. With its classic shape and modern construction this stolp farm forms an exception in the young polder.
The Wieringermeer was only drained in the 1930s. The landscape was then designed fitting to the spirit of the times, including the agricultural scale enlargement of that period. The farms that were built here were often rectangular or elongated in shape. They matched modern farming methods and the large-scale character of the new enterprises.
That is exactly why this stolp farm stands out immediately here. Travelling further through Hollands Kroon or North Holland? Pay attention along the way to the roof shapes of the farms you pass. Maybe you suddenly see more pyramids of the polder land than you thought...
