Post office Hippolytushoef - Hippolytushoef

N 52.9060025 / E 4.962887

The former post office with director's residence was built in 1919. The office was quite large, considering the size of Hippolytushoef. Apparently, it was expected that when Wieringen was no longer an island, the population would grow. The village might even develop into a town.

The design is by the famous architect Joseph Crouwel. His work is considered a precursor to the Amsterdam School. The post office was built in a sober expressionist style and already shows clear influences from this movement.

As was customary at the time, the post office also housed the director's residence. The former director's residence on the first floor is a spacious home. The building was used as a post office until 2000.

The building's history as a former post office can still be seen in details such as the brick-set coat of arms with the text “JE MAINTIENDRAI” (“I will maintain”) and the red letterbox in the middle of the façade.

During the Second World War, the building had a dual role. The upper floor was used by the resistance, while German soldiers were stationed downstairs. Today, the former post office is used as a private residence.
