The Palendike was once essential to keep the land dry. From the 15th century wooden poles and sea grass were used to reinforce the dikes. These poles, usually made of oak wood, were firmly fixed into the ground with crossbeams for extra strength.
The local community and dike authorities financed and built this together. This shows how people used to tackle water management by working well together.
By the 18th century, however, the poles were affected by shipworms in the salt water and the method was no longer used. Now that the once salty Zuiderzee has become fresh water, a replica could be built here. Since 2006 you can again see here how people protected themselves against the wild water for centuries.
