On Sept. 17 in 1944, the Battle of Arnhem began. They also called this Operation Market Garden. The Germans were strong and on Sept. 19 some 3,000 soldiers retreated to the village of Oosterbeek.

Soldiers were cared for in Oosterbeek's Old Church. Fighting went on around the church for eight days, leaving it badly damaged. The church is therefore one of the symbols around this battle and is now used for Protestant church services.
