Delft and the Dutch Royal House are inextricably linked. Since William of Orange, almost all of its members have been interred in the royal tombs in the New Church. It was only a coincidence that William of Orange was buried in Delft. After all, his ancestors were located in the Big Church of Breda, but that city was owned by the Spaniards at the time of his death. Thus, the 'Father of the Fatherland' was buried in the New Church.

The famous Delft master Johannes Vermeer must have seen the Nieuwe Kerk every day. In his masterpiece View of Delft, the church takes centre stage. The light on the tower is especially striking – some researchers believe Vermeer used it to subtly reflect the relationship between the spiritual and everyday life. The church stood right in his daily surroundings, and it’s very likely that he often heard its bells and carillon while working in his studio.
