The Dintelse Gorzen is a marshy piece of land where both fresh and salt water occur. Because of this combination many different species of plants and animals live there.
After the closure of the Philipsdam, ebb and flow disappeared in this area. As a result some parts always came to be under water and other slightly higher lying ground always stayed dry. This provides the unique nature in this area. Many different species of birds occur here. The shallow water is ideal for among others the spoonbill and great egret, while the buzzard actually prefers to hunt above the extensive plains. In addition large grazers also walk around here, the Scottish Highlanders. Although they look wonderfully soft, they must not be petted.
The area can be very waterlogged, especially in the winter months. So make sure you have good waterproof shoes with a sturdy tread, that way you stand firm and stay dry!
