Make a cycling trip through the water rich edge of the Brabantse Wal and start at Nature gateway Benedensas. Here you enjoy the Dintelse Gorzen, a nature area near Steenbergen. Because of the strong current of the Dintel, it never succeeded to polder this area. That has led to the current nature area, after completion of the Philipsdam the tides disappeared and islands of fresh ground arose in the saline landscape. This provides a special vegetation, you find here orchids, glasswort, sea aster and saline spergularia. Furthermore large grazers live there and endlessly many birds; geese, herons, spoonbills, but also the hen harrier and the buzzard.
At the Nature gateway you also find the Steenbergsche Vliet. The marshlands here form the ideal resting area for fish and water birds. You can rent a sloop or canoe here to discover the Steenbergsche Vliet from the water.
Finally you take a look at the historical lock complex, at the Nature gateway, that was built in 1824 to protect the land against high water but nowadays is mainly used for pleasure boating.
