Nature Park De Maasheggen is the oldest cultural landscape in the Netherlands and is located in the eastern part of the province of North Brabant, bordering the River Meuse. The area is known for its traditional hedge landscape, where hedgerows of hawthorn, blackthorn, roses and other shrubs were planted as livestock barriers and field boundaries. Together, they form a beautiful mosaic of hedges, meadows and drinking ponds.
The park offers a unique ecosystem with rare plants and animals, such as otters and beavers. There are various walking and cycling routes, including a family cycle route based on the story of Phaedrus and his fables. It is also a popular destination for birdwatchers, thanks to the more than 100 bird species found here.
National Park De Maasheggen was designated as the 21st National Park of the Netherlands in 2018. In addition, the park holds UNESCO Man & Biosphere status.
