In the early 20th century, Amsterdam planned to use the Naardermeer as a landfill. This prompted Jac. P. Thijsse and Eli Heijmans to establish the Natuurmonumenten Association. They purchased the area, making the Naardermeer the first protected nature reserve in the Netherlands. Bird enthusiasts will be delighted: over 75 species nest here, including the purple heron, bearded reedling, and kingfisher. There's also a cormorant colony you can visit during a boat excursion. In 2016, an otter was spotted in the Naardermeer for the first time in years.
