Hidden inside a former orchid greenhouse in Schipluiden lies Museum De Beeldenkas, a unique art venue where imagination and expression come together. Here, Willem Berkhout, former grower and self-taught artist, presents his impressive collection of over 475 mosaic sculptures. Since 2001, he has transformed concrete, steel and mosaic into life-sized sculptures depicting themes such as feminism, veterans and mythical gods. His works, often humorous and socially critical, are displayed in themed groups with explanatory notes, inviting visitors to reflect and marvel.
Alongside Berkhout’s sculptures, the greenhouse also features hundreds of paintings by the Leiden-based artist Jacob Kanbier (1949–2020). Kanbier, founder of neosymbolism, was inspired by artists such as Willem de Kooning and Jean-Michel Basquiat. His expressive, often explosive painting style is represented in numerous national and international collections, including the Stedelijk Museum De Lakenhal and the Dutch Senate building.
