Monument Cornelis de Houtman - Gouda

N 52.009 / E 4.71543

On 2 April 1595, the Gouwenaar Cornelis de Houtman sailed for Amsterdam. Compagnie van Verre was the first Dutchman along the Cape of Good Hope to the Dutch East Indies. The entrepreneurial spirit and merchant spirit of the De Houtman brothers is remembered in Gouda by a monument. The monument contained four copper ship's bays. These were unfortunately stolen in 2011.
