In 1163, Montfoort Castle was built by bishop Godefried of Rhenen. In the disaster year 1672, the castle was invaded by French troops of Louis XIV. The soldiers blew up the castle. Since then, it has never been rebuilt. Now only the part of the outer bailey still stands, which is still very impressive to see.
