The mill on the edge of Ommen’s town centre is part of the Historical Museum Ommen, which is located in the neighbouring building. This museum highlights the history of Ommen and its surroundings, focusing on traditional crafts, everyday life in the past and well-known local figures like Reverend Ledeboer and Baron van Pallandt.
The mill itself has a long and remarkable history. It was originally built in the Zaan region, then operated for a while in Deventer before being moved to Ommen in 1824. In the 1950s, the mill fell into disrepair, prompting the municipality of Ommen to purchase and restore it in 1960. The old saw shed was replaced with a new foundation.
The mill is managed by Stichting Ommer Molens. In 1999, millers installed a millstone on their own initiative. There are plans to rebuild the original sawmill, further restoring the site to its former glory.
