Mill De Hoop in Sint-Maartensdijk is a characteristic, round stone tower mill from 1847 and has always served as a grain mill. Grinding grain was therefore the core activity. From the grain bread and animal feed were made. With that it used to play an important role in the food supply of the village.
The mill stands in the middle of the village and has been a national monument since 1974 because of its cultural historical value. In the course of the 20th century the regular milling activity stopped, but until into the 60s the mill could still turn incidentally. After that it fell more and more into disrepair and later the sails and other external parts were removed, as a result of which only a mill body remained.
Nowadays De Hoop is a remnant mill in decay, but it is still a recognisable and protected monument in the street scene of Sint-Maartensdijk. Because the mill is no longer completely capable of milling, the focus now lies mainly on preservation of heritage and visibility for the public; it is interesting for lovers of history and mill technology, and forms a nice photo moment during walks through the village.
