When you cycle along Molenweg in Maasland, you’ll spot Mill De Drie Lelies (The Three Lilies) from afar: an impressive stone windmill from 1767. Built to replace an earlier wooden mill, this mill ground grain for local farmers and bakers for centuries. Up until the 1960s, it was even used to produce animal feed.
After a period of inactivity and decay, during which the mill was damaged in a storm in 2002, De Drie Lelies underwent extensive restoration, completed in 2007. Since then, the mill has been turning again, powered by volunteer effort. The mill is owned by Lely Benelux B.V. and is maintained by dedicated volunteers.
A striking feature is the stone above the entrance, laid by Teuntje van der Lely, daughter of the first miller. Tragically, she died shortly afterwards in an accident involving the mill’s sails.
