Close to Ruurlo Castle is a maze dating back to 1890 and covering no less than 8740 m2. This makes Doolhof Ruurlo not only one of the oldest but also the largest in the Netherlands. In 1996, the maze even made it into the Guiness Book of Records as the largest in the world. And yet it doesn't take that much time to find the middle thanks to the five-metre-wide paths.

The Doolhof van Ruurlo was designed by Daniël Marot (ca. 1663 - 1752). This French garden architect entered the service of King Willem III and the Frisian stadholders in 1686. Under his influence, the Louis XIV style spread throughout the Netherlands and England. His designs included Het Loo Palace plus part of the garden. The beautiful maze was once completely neglected but was restored between 1975 and 1984 and now looks beautiful. Interrupt your cycle route to get lost among the hedges of this historic maze.
