This artificial lake is located between the villages of Appelscha and Elsloo. Why is this lake called “Lake Canada” (Canadameer)? Simple: it’s very close to a hamlet called Canada. When in 1960 the construction works for the N381 motorway were underway, this is where they got the sand from. In the middle of the lake there is a tiny island. It’s a favourite spot for day tourists, but take care: the water can be 30 metres (almost 100 metres) deep! This may pose a risk for swimmers.
