Near the West Frisian village of Andijk lies the Koopmanspolder, a unique nature reserve that serves as a testing ground for future water management. In 2012, the polder was redesigned by visual artist Ben Raaijman, based on a whirlpool-inspired circular structure. The area covers 16 hectares and has been under ecological management by Landschap Noord-Holland since 2023. A fish-friendly screw pump connects the polder to the IJsselmeer, allowing fish to migrate and enabling flexible water level control.
The varying water levels create a range of habitats for marsh and water birds such as the bittern and spoonbill, and provide ideal spawning and nursery grounds for fish. The area also attracts insects and plants, with species like yellow rattle and various butterflies increasing in number. From 15 July to 15 October, the polder is open to the public. A shell path from the West Frisian Omringdijk leads to the central viewpoint at the heart of the spiral. A perfect pitstop to enjoy the peace and nature.
