Long before nature conservation became a concept, duck decoys lay as quiet enclaves in the landscape. No shouting, no hunting, no woodcutting… In short, no noise at all: around the decoy, a strict silence zone applied. These decoys were built from the 14th century onwards by wealthy landowners. Ducks were trapped for food and for sale. Using a clever system of long catching pipes, decoy ducks and reed screens, the birds were lured into the trap.
At one time, Wieringen had no fewer than eighteen duck decoys, compared to a total of 54 in all of the Netherlands. This decoy is one of the few that has been preserved. Eventually, the area was transformed into the Kooibos, which has been maintained by volunteers since 2015, a beautiful walking area with old ditches and tall trees.
