In Laag-Keppel, you'll find a unique pair of mills: a watermill and a windmill working together in an ingenious milling process. The watermill, dating back to before 1392, was powered for centuries by the flowing water of the Oude IJssel. In the 19th century, the current mill was built, partly using components from the 17th century. Originally, the mill had two water wheels to grind grain and process seeds into oil.

Next to the watermill stands the Spinnekopmolen, an octagonal smock mill from 1856. This windmill was constructed to operate when the water level was too low or the stream's power insufficient. The wooden upper structure rests on a stone base, allowing the mill to make optimal use of the wind. The mill is also known as the Follega Mill, as it originated from the Frisian village of Follega.

This combination of a water and windmill is unique in the Netherlands, enabling the millers to produce year-round, regardless of weather or season. The Keppel millers were thus among the region's most important economic players. Both mills are still operational and maintained by volunteers.
