HIS EXTRAORDINARY COURTESY
AND HIS SPLENDID CONDUCT
WERE A PERPETUAL INSPIRATION
TO HIS COMRADES,
FOR WHOM HE GAVE HIS LIFE'.
This text appears on The Joe Mann monument commemorating the liberation of Best. The monument is named after the American paratrooper of the same name; Joe Eugene Mann. On 19 September 1944, he saved the lives of his comrades by throwing himself on a hand grenade.
The memorial consists of four white columns, depicting mourners standing around a soldier on the ground. At the top is a pelican protecting her young. This is a Christian symbol of self-sacrifice. According to legend, the pelican is said to feed her young with her own blood.
