Hernen Mill - Hernen

N 51.828268 / E 5.693695

Traditionally, the windmill belonged to the properties under Hernen castle and seigniory. Since 1682, the mill has been owned by the Van Steenhuys family. The current corn mill was built in 1745. In 1940, the castle and its immediate surroundings were donated to the Friends of Gelderse Castles Foundation. In 1959, this foundation also acquired the Hernense Bos and the mill. In 1975, the mill was transferred to the foundation Het Gelders Landschap. Limited repairs were made to the mill in 1965 and 1984. Between 1998 and 2001, the mill was thoroughly restored.

Around 1969, the mill became known to television viewers in the Netherlands. At that time, the TV series about knight Floris was made. The Hernen Mill featured in several episodes. Almost legendary is the sixth episode, titled De Vrijbrief. Here it is shown at the end that soldiers are tied to the sails and then, while the mill is turning, left behind.
