In places where poverty used to reign, there was often no money to build a church. Yet the dead had to be rung, and a bell tower was often built for this purpose. In Goïngarijp, the belfry stands next to the church, which was built in 1770. It is not clear whether the belfry was built at the same time or whether it was renovated that year.
