Gemma Chapel - Sittard

N 50.993188 / E 5.8719332

The Gemma Chapel is a chapel dedicated to Saint Gemma Galgani. Italian Gemma (1878-1903) was a pharmacist's daughter who had many supernatural experiences and visions. In 1940, she was canonised and became the patron saint of pharmacists and chemists.

Toon Hermans was an ardent worshipper of Saint Gemma. When he was seriously ill in his youth, his mother held a novena in honour of Saint Gemma in this chapel. A novena is a series of nine days when people pray to God in a special way with a special intention, such as asking for healing or strength for a sick person.

That Toon worshipped Saint Gemma throughout his life was evident from the fact that he celebrated his 40th wedding anniversary in the chapel and his funeral service was held there. His prayer card had a picture of Saint Gemma on it.
