In the 1930s, the Gees Forestry was created to stop the drifting sands of a local dune area. Since then, it has grown into a vibrant forest with mixed tree species, quiet fens and heathlands.
The Geeserstroom stream winds through the nature reserve. Where it was once canalised, it’s now restored into a self-regulating brook valley. Marsh birds such as bitterns, water rails and bluethroats thrive along its banks.
Between the trees and fields, you’ll find traces of cultural history. Several pingo ruins and burial mounds have been discovered, both prehistoric remains. Can you spot them in the landscape?
