On 11 September 1944, the first liberators entered the Netherlands at this spot. They scouted the area in preparation for Operation Market Garden. To commemorate this fact, the monument 'Bergeijk, Gate of Liberation' stands at the border crossing De Barrier.

On the night of 20-21 September 1944, the Royal Dutch Brigade Princess Irene also set foot on Dutch soil here for the first time again.
