Behind the Reformed Church in Oud-Vossemeer stands a modest monument that honours a global ideal. The Four Freedoms Monument refers to the four freedoms that President Franklin D Roosevelt spoke of in 1941. Freedoms that should apply to everyone:
freedom of speech
freedom of religion
freedom from want
freedom from fear
The monument was placed here as a tribute to Roosevelt’s vision and to his roots in Zeeland. It also commemorates the connection between Roosevelt and Oud-Vossemeer, and the values that were under threat during the Second World War.
At the heart of the monument is a work by visual artist Nico van den Boezem (1935–2017): four zinc panels that cross each other diagonally. They form an open cross, a simple and powerful symbol of freedom and connection.
