The history of Fortress ’t Genneperhuis dates back to the 11th century, when it began as a modest castle of the Lords of Gennep. Thanks to its unique location at the meeting point of the Niers and the Meuse, it developed into a strategic stronghold.
The medieval castle grew into a powerful fortress that played a key role during the Eighty Years’ War. Whoever controlled the fortress controlled the shipping routes on both the Meuse and the Niers. After a heavy siege by Frederick Henry in 1641, the fortress was eventually destroyed by the French in the 18th century, after which nature gradually took over.
Today, Fortress ’t Genneperhuis is the perfect place for an active break. Walk along the reconstructed ramparts and discover the foundations of this once impregnable stronghold. From the viewing tower, you have a spectacular panoramic view of the point where the Niers flows into the Meuse – a unique photo opportunity along your route.
There are several information boards at Fortress ’t Genneperhuis.
