Willemstad's old centre is one big monument. The town was therefore a strategically located fortified town, which became the centre of the Stelling van het Hollandsch Diep and the Volkerak in 1874. Hence, you will come across bastions, bunkers, a barracks, powder magazines and soldiers' houses in Willemstad. All to protect Holland from troops trying to cross the Hollandsch Diep from Brabant. Hop off for a walk on the ramparts!
