Of this former fort in fortress town Steenbergen only the contours can be seen. The site is owned by Natuurmonumenten. In 2017 they received a subsidy from the province of North Brabant to reconstruct the fort. By now an access bridge over the moat and a lookout tower have been realised so that visitors can observe the fort and the polders from different viewpoints.
On the fort wild flowers bloom that make it an ideal place for insects and birds. In the waters around the fort you can spot the reed bunting, reed warbler or swans.
In bygone times Fort Henricus protected Steenbergen against the conquests and plundering of the Spaniards and in 1809 Napoleon positioned his cannons there to repel a British invasion.
