Fort Beneden Lent is located on the east side of the Waalbrug, in a quiet spot along the river. This brick defensive structure was built around 1862 as part of the New Dutch Waterline. The fort was intended to protect the railway bridge and the city of Nijmegen from outside attacks. Due to its strategic location on the Waal, it played an important role in the defence of the eastern part of the Netherlands.
Today, the fort no longer serves as a military structure, but its contours are still clearly visible. The thick walls, low arches and location on the water make it a place with character. The site is freely accessible and popular with walkers and those seeking peace and quiet.
