The origin of De Berenkuil goes back to 1947. At that time, there was a wooden kiosk here, called the 'Waterbosje'. You could buy coffee, tea and ice cream there, served through a hatch.
When tourism increased in the coastal region, Staatsbosbeheer started expanding the kiosk. On Ascension Day 1963, De Berenkuil was opened, although not yet with its current name. That name spontaneously arose on this opening day, after the first customer asked: "This is the Berenkuil, right?"
De Berenkuil is only accessible by bike or on foot. That creates a unique atmosphere: you can fully relax here in the middle of the forest.
The pavilion offers a varied menu including coffee with apple pie, freshly made sandwiches and local specialities like the house-brewed beer De Wijze Beer. The spacious terrace and the cosy indoor area with wood stove make it a lovely place to unwind.
