Floodplains are specially designated areas that lie outside the river dikes. These areas give the Waal extra space during high water and thus prevent flooding.
This water-rich area provides great diversity in plants and birds and is therefore a beautiful nature area for walking and cycling. During high water, some parts may be inaccessible, but once the water recedes, the flooded areas leave behind an oasis of green. These kinds of areas attract many types of birds but also animals like the crested newt and the beaver. In this way, both humans and nature benefit from the floodplains.
The floodplains are located close to several junctions and are perfectly situated to cycle past.
