Firing fields are open areas within the range of cannons, crucial for the defense of fortified cities like Naarden. Each cannon had its own firing field, kept free of buildings to ensure an unobstructed line of fire. These fields are part of our cultural heritage and are connected to the fortifications of the New Dutch Waterline and the Defense Line of Amsterdam.
The Circles Act of 1853 aimed to keep the firing fields around fortifications free from construction, allowing enemies to be easily spotted and targeted. After the repeal of this law in 1963, many of these areas lost their protection. Fortunately, the firing fields of Naarden have largely come under the management of the Goois Nature Reserve, thanks in part to provincial subsidies, preserving their protected status.
