The Dommel river used to have many bends, but most were straightened in 1875 and again in 1971. One remaining curve still leads you to the historic farm Oud Herlaer. Located opposite Castle Maurick on the other side of the river, this farm is built on the foundations of the former Castle Out Herlaer.
The original castle was first mentioned in 1076. In 1629 it served as a guesthouse for high ranking international visitors who came to watch the Siege of Den Bosch up close.
By 1736 the castle had fallen into disrepair and was sold for demolition. What remains today is part of the old wall integrated into the farm, including an arrow slit in the stable.
Since 2017 the estate has been owned by Brabants Landschap, which plans to turn Out Herlaer into a museum style landscape. The plan includes an exhibition space, artist studios and room for possible archaeological discoveries. Based on old maps, they will restore the layout with the main castle, forecourt and orchard, while also improving the ecological value of the area.
The original course of the Dommel will guide the design. The nature management will create a mix of wet and dry areas and give room for artistic projects like land art.
