In the heart of the former bog landscape around the Bourtanger Moor, you’ll find this museum focused on the history of raised bogs, peat extraction and land reclamation. Here you’ll see how a swampy landscape was transformed by human activity through an impressive collection of old machines, narrow-gauge field railways, and stories of the workers and the natural environment.
You’ll walk through interactive exhibitions showing how the moor was developed and what machines were used, including the famous “Mammut” plough by the Ottomeyer company. The landscape was changed dramatically.
Outdoors, you’ll find old locomotives and peat-cutting equipment. For children, there’s plenty to do too, including a petting zoo, play equipment and nature trails.
