D'Onlanden nature reserve - Ouddorp

N 51.798836951309 / E 3.8778403717445

This 6-hectare nature development area lies amid the fields near Ouddorp. Zuid-Hollands Landschap took over the management of D'Onlanden and decided to excavate the top layer of soil. This lowered the area and made it wetter. With astonishing results.

In spring, the area adorns itself in a purple glow of orchids, including the bee orchid, reed orchid, spotted orchid and broad orchid. After the flowering period in late June, the area is grazed by sheep, contributing to ideal conditions for the orchids.

The wide, marshy reed beds on the banks provide the optimal nesting places for birds such as the reed bunting and reed warbler. Skylarks are also found here.

The plant species in the area are very vulnerable and the need for birds to rest is important, especially during the breeding season. As a result, the area can only be admired from the cycle path and lookout point along the Groeneweg in Ouddorp.
