Dolmen G1 - Noordlaren
One of the two dolmens on Groningen territory is G1. A few stones remain of this: one closing stone, four side stones and two capstones, one of which is remarkably large. Prof Van Giffen marked the missing stones with cement fillings, giving you a good idea of their original size. Probably the G1 had as many as five capstones.
Excavations in 1957 found the remains of about 150 pots. A large boulder lying close to the dolmen may once have been part of it. The bronze name plaque that sat on it has since disappeared.
The dolmen is about a kilometre west of the road between Zuidlaren and Glimmen. It can be reached via a well-trodden dirt road and is signposted from the road.
