The Devil’s Bridge has been an important crossing over the river Mark for centuries. Since 1531 there was a simple pedestrian bridge at this location, then known as the Ginnekense Bridge. Several stories exist about the origin of its current name. According to legend the devil made a deal: he would build the bridge in one night in exchange for the first soul to cross it. The villagers however sent a dog and thus kept their word without losing anyone. Another story says that ‘devil’ was mainly a curse word, because the steep bridge slope caused much swearing from traders and their horses.
